In today’s increasingly digital world, the security of Wi-Fi networks is crucial for protecting sensitive data and ensuring reliable connections. In this article, we will explore a dangerous attack known as “Evil Twin” with the use of a “Captive Portal.” We will compare this threat to the previous approach I presented using AirMon-NG and Hashcat to test the security of Wi-Fi networks.

What is Evil Twin?
The Evil Twin attack is a sneaky tactic used by attackers to deceive user devices. Essentially, an attacker creates a fake Wi-Fi network with the same SSID as a legitimate network that the user’s device has previously connected to. The goal is to make the user’s device de-authenticate from the legitimate network and connect to the attacker-controlled Evil Twin network.

Use of Evil Twin in Public and Private Spaces:
This type of attack is often used in public places like airports, coffee shops, or hotels where people automatically connect to available Wi-Fi networks. Attackers can then intercept data passing through the compromised Wi-Fi network, compromising user privacy.

In a private setting, the Evil Twin can be combined with a “Captive Portal.” A captive portal is a web page that requires the user to enter credentials or accept terms and conditions before granting access to the Wi-Fi network. Often, attackers ask for the router password or even more sensitive credentials like email, social media, or banking account details.

Captive Portal with Beef:
To implement a Captive Portal, attackers can use tools like Beef, one of many available options. With a correctly configured captive portal, it is possible to obtain sensitive user information and even steal their credentials.

A Threat Beyond Wi-Fi Networks:
The Evil Twin and Captive Portal are not limited to threats against Wi-Fi networks. They can also be used in spam email attacks and for intercepting online communications, representing a significant threat to privacy and information security.

Difference from the Previous Approach:
Unlike the previous approach that used AirMon-NG and Hashcat to test Wi-Fi network passwords, Evil Twin and Captive Portal represent a more sophisticated and dangerous threat. While the former focused on violating Wi-Fi passwords, the latter involves social engineering and theft of sensitive data.

In conclusion, Evil Twin and Captive Portal highlight the importance of protecting Wi-Fi networks and being cautious about public networks. Network security is fundamental for protecting personal data and preventing potential attacks. Staying informed about these threats is the first step in mitigating risks and ensuring a secure Internet connection.
