Legaly: Understand Terms and Conditions in One Click

? Official website | ? Chrome Extension

In a digital context where accepting Terms and Conditions has become a habit as common as it is unconscious, Legally It is proposed as an innovative and concrete solution to increase users' awareness of the legal implications hidden behind the most ignored documents on the web.

What is Legaly?

Legally is a Google Chrome extension designed to analyze, simplify and highlight critical points in online legal documents, in particular Terms of Service and Privacy Policies. Thanks to the integration with OpenAI APIs, Legaly is able to summarize the most relevant clauses in a few seconds, highlighting ambiguities, implicit obligations, legal traps or clauses potentially harmful to the user's rights.

The extension allows you to:

  • Analyze pages containing legal terms with one click.
  • Receive clear and readable summaries of the conditions of use and data processing.
  • View a “risk level” associated with the document being analyzed.
  • Navigate through a minimal and intuitive interface, oriented towards privacy.

The system was designed not to store any user data, maintaining a “privacy-first” philosophy.

Skills Involved and Technologies Used

During the development of Legaly, I consolidated and expanded both front-end and back-end skills, going through all the phases of design, prototyping and distribution of the extension.

Main technologies used:

  • Frontend:
    • JavaScript and manifest V3 for building the Chrome extension.
    • Minimal UI designed with attention to user experience, including dashboard, about page and feedback system.
    • Multilingual localization (IT, EN, DE, ES).
  • Backend:
    • Use of FirebaseFunctions for secure API call management and user rate limiting.
    • Integration with OpenAI for the automatic processing and simplification of legal texts.
    • Continuous deployment and cloud configuration via Firebase CLI.

Tools and methodologies:

  • Node.js workflow managed via terminal (nvm, npm, firebase-tools).
  • Continuous versioning and testing via development environment (VSCode, WindSurf AI).
  • Implementation of a scalability and resource optimization logic, including a request limiting system to avoid abuse.

Project Status

Currently, Legaly is publicly available on the Chrome Web Store and fully functional. The extension has passed the testing and review stages, offering all the main features in a stable and polished interface:

  • Instant analysis of legal documents using artificial intelligence.
  • Content summary with risk assessment (? High, ? Medium, ? Low).
  • Highlighting problematic clauses through a system of patterns and keywords.
  • Active multilingual support (IT, EN, DE, ES).
  • Minimal, responsive and privacy-oriented user interface.

The project is in full swing rollout, with a solid technical foundation that already allows users to make informed decisions without having to navigate complex legal language.

Upcoming developments Currently in the design and testing phase include:

  • Pro Version: with advanced features such as automatic email notifications in case of updates to the Terms and Conditions already analyzed.
  • User Account Management: to track the history of the analyses performed, customize preferences and access advanced settings.
  • Proactive integration into websites: with overlay next to Terms & Privacy links for smoother, more contextual scanning.
  • User feedback system: to collect bug reports or improve analysis patterns.
  • Linguistic expansion: to include new languages and increase the global accessibility of the tool.

Final Considerations

Legaly is a significant project for me not only in technical terms, but also for its potential impact on the daily digital life of users. Developing it meant dealing with complex issues such as legal compliance, responsible use of artificial intelligence and optimizing the user experience.

This project continues to be a fertile ground to grow my skills in web development, AI and user-centered design, with a concrete look towards ethical and sustainable solutions for the digital future.
